MSU - Krause (59th)

Final

1:57 p.m. - Final score, Michigan State 5, Milwaukee 2. Tough stuff in the first half, but the three by State in the second half were very nice goals. Good to see Panthers hang tough and have two freshmen net their first career goals. Thanks for tuning in! See you next week.

1:54 p.m. - In other Horizon League action...Oakland trails Michigan 4-0 at the half and Wright State is headed to overtime with Ohio.

1:51 p.m. - UWM almost adds another as MSU played a ball back to the keeper but Morgan was right on top of it. The keeper slid to clear and the ball went right off the chest of Morgan and JUST over the bar. 6 minutes to play.

1:47 p.m. - Goal Milwaukee! Callie springs Swittel right down the middle! The keeper was forced to come out and Taylor looked up and seemed at ease to curve the ball around her for her first collegiate goal.

1:46 p.m. - Paige with another save and then a nice slide tackle in the box by Kelly M.

1:39 p.m. - PK! Morgan got behind the line and got a shot off but was taken down in the box. Stephans takes it and...scores! 5-1 MSU...16:35 left

1:38 p.m. - Worthington and Maria back on for UWM

1:33 p.m. - Nice bit of play for UWM as Holbert has a give and go with Swittel but her shot went right at the keeper. Holbert about to be subbed off for Hoerchner. 21 to play

1:31 p.m. - Taylor Swittel now in for Milwaukee at forward for Krissy.

1:28 p.m. - Callie back on for Emma W.

1:24 p.m. - Morgan also came on. Still trying to find out how that 4th goal went in....and now a 5th! Krause had a defender on her hip, carrying to her right from midfield but launched it on a rope over Paige who was starting to creep off her line. 30 minutes of action left.

1:20: - Yellow card for MSU. And another goal for MSU. Totally missed it as I was trying to see who we are about to sub in...who is Vienna for Maria.

1:18 p.m. - 3-0 MSU. Another through ball beats the D down the middle. Paige came out, attacker passed to her right where White curled the ball around Rachael and into the empty net. Rachael instantly pulled for Sky.

1:10 p.m - 2nd half underway and quite a few subs for Milwaukee. Paige still in goal, the back line is (right to left) now Manski, Tatum, Amy and Rachael Van Keulen...mids are Stern, Holbert, Emma W. and Maria with Kelly L. and Krissy still up top.

1:05 p.m. A few observations before we get back underway ... This game is pretty even, despite the MSU advantage in shots and obviously goals. Milwaukee's having a bit of a hard time in the final third, but they've definitely possessed well and carried it deep ... For having three freshmen on the back line for a decent portion of the half, Milwaukee's defense looks pretty solid. MSU is trying to beat the offside trap with their speed, which is no easy task no matter what year you are ... Paige has played well in net and is incredibly unlucky to have two goals against her. Taking nothing away from MSU - there's something to be said for creating your own luck, but they've found the back of the net twice without really beating the keeper.

12:58 p.m.  - The MSU staff graciously offers to run stats to our coaching staff for me...such hospitality. Anyway...here are some halftime stats...

              UWM    MSU
Goals        0      -    2
Shots        3      -     6
Saves        3      -    2
Corners    1      -     3

Goals by MSU's Van Poppelen in the 10th and a UWM own goal in the 36th.

12:54 p.m. - A lit bit of frantic work by both sides as State rattled off back-to-back corners in the final minute but in the end no damage done. Halftime score, 2-0 MSU. Running stats down to the field but I'll try to update before play resumes.

12:52 p.m. - One minute til half.

12:47 p.m.  - More phsyical play as Mel and a State girl both go down. Maria registers her first collegiate shot on net but the keeper was right there. Hoerchner now on for Holbert. 5 to play before the break.

12:42 p.m. - 2-0 MSU. Wow. One of the unluckiest goals I've seen in a while. Nice through ball by MSU, Paige again comes off her line and takes a rocket off her shins that bounces off another player (it literally happened so fast no one in the press box knows who scored) and into the net. Just wow.

12:40 p.m. - Mel is up off the bench and is set to check in. Guessing she's coming on for Krissy. 11 to play in the first half.

12:37 p.m. - This game is getting physical as now a State player goes down. Nothing chippy, just both teams going all out from what I can tell. The trainer comes out and more subs are made.

12:35 p.m. - Kelly Manski comes on for Caity at right back and just after Kelly Lewers takes a hard hit to the stomach and Callie quickly up off the bench. Guessing she's coming in up top.

12:33 p.m. - Nothing much of note. State has controlled possession of late. A few more subs from them and Worthington comes on for Morgan. 16 minutes left in the half.

12:27 p.m. - More injuries. Caity had her jersey grabbed by a State forward (Vogel) went down in the action and had to be helped off. On the restart MSU beat the offside trap, forcing Paige out early again. The attacker beat her to the ball but her shot dinged off the far post and Amy cleared the threat. Phew!

12:25 p.m. - Amy gets taken out while controlling the ball in the back. Nothing malicious, back had the front of her foot taken out by the MSU forward. Ref gives her time to recover and the ball is back in play.

12:22 p.m. - Another great sequence for Morgan, taking the ball in the right corner and getting through three MSU defenders. In the end, her cross was blocked and cleared away. Panthers already far more consistently dangerous today, despite registering just one shot.

12:21 p.m. - Just before the subs, Morgan carried the ball all the way down the ride flank...MSU appears to be respecting her speed. Nice movement for Milwaukee in the box but Sterns shot was blocked and cleared out.

12:20 p.m.  - The Spartans with a good bit of possession for a bit. Their speed is definitely a factor, but Milwaukee is adjusting well and I'd guess overall possession is about 50-50. Three subs coming for State.

12:15 p.m. - Amy with a great free kick from near midfield that the MSU defender had no choice but to head clear. Holbert's corner is cleared away and Stephans is coming on for Behnke.

12:14 p.m. - Another dangerous chance for State but Paige came far off her line and made a nice tackle in space, knocking it out. Nothing from the ensuing corner.

12:12 p.m. - 1-0 Michigan State. MSU plays a floating ball in from the corner, Paige jumped with another Spartan attacker and the ball popped straight up. Fastest person to locate the ball in the air was Van Popplen for MSU and she headed it in. 10th minute.

12:08 p.m. - Panthers create a dangerous opportunity as Holbert carries down the right side but her cross across the mouth of goal had no one on the back end. Milwaukee looking very strong, but rumor has it State's forwards are plenty fast, looking for quick counters.

12:05 p.m. - Milwaukee starts with it and already looks like it's built off Friday's tough match, controlling the ball and carrying deep into MSU territory right away.

Noon - Milwaukee is sporting its gold jerseys with black shorts + black socks. MSU is going with their all-grey look, with a green stripe and green numbers on their jerseys.

11:55 a.m.  - Starters are in. For Milwaukee it's Paige in goal, Amy, Tatum, Caity and Rachael Van Keulen (making a start for the injured Hannah) on the back line, Holbert, Stern, Morgan + V in the middle with Kelly L. and Krissy on top.

Michigan State will go with Clem in goal, along with Krause, Vogel, Riley, White, Van Poppelen, Caruso, Mullen, Kjellstrom, Kovan, and Goodenough.

11:48 a.m. - Editor's note - I'll stick with using Central time as MSU (like most college's besides UWM) count down with their soccer clock and the conversion is just not easy for this mathamatically-challenged SID on the fly.

Also, this has been a wonderful first trip. The team obviously didn't get the result it wanted at Michigan, but they played one of the best teams in the country incredibly hard and basically even for 70 minutes. We also got some time out of the hotel, visiting coach Gulrajani's family for some ping pong and games, and also taking in the farmstead of former Panther Helen Steinhauser and her family.

11:00 a.m.  - Good morning from East Lansing! The Panthers have arrived at the field, where it is a sunny and very warm day. Temps are supposed to push up to 90 and there is not a cloud in the sky. We're just under an hour from kickoff. Lineups will be posted in a bit. If you have any questions, feel free to comment or send them to me on twitter (@timprahl). Thanks!

Follow along as Assistant SID Tim Prahl live blogs the Milwaukee Women's Soccer wraps up its first road trip of the season at Michigan State. Kick-off is scheduled for Noon Central and the blog will go live by that time. Thanks!
